Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church

1 East Oak Street
908-766-1616

Jesus Christ is the head of The Presbyterian Church in Basking Ridge. Centered in Christ, we can look forward boldly. We can see an inclusive, welcoming and caring community of faith that is a vibrant, active force locally and in the world. We can see a growing number of people gathering together for dynamic, inspirational and joyful worship and we can see them meeting in diverse small groups, connecting with each other meaningful ways. We see an open congregation, tolerant and supportive of different faith journeys, a congregation with genuine concern for the well-being of others. We will be a church that provides spiritual nourishment and relevant guidance on how to follow in Christ's footprints here, now and in the future.

In the center of our historic town, beside our Greek Revival church, stands an ancient Oak tree with stout limbs reaching out in all directions. Long before George Washington stopped to eat beneath the Oak's branches, it is said that, between morning and afternoon services in the log cabin sanctuary, the church's parishioners would spread their blankets under the shade of the leathery leaves to picnic and rest, while their children played. They were a hearty, dedicated people who valued education and mission, and they believed passionately in the future.
In nearly three hundred years, some things have not changed. Today, those same Oak branches reach even further into the church?s yard, offering shade to a summer communion service or to the fellowship of members sharing lemonade between services. Today, the children who play beneath the Oak's sheltering branches may be from our Sunday School, The Tree House Child Caring Center, a tutoring program for children from Newark, children of mothers coming to pick up infant care supplies from our babies center. The symbol of our church has always been our Oak. Its roots reach ever deeper into the earth for nourishment, as we search ever deeper into our faith to nurture our commitment to Christ?s call. For today we, too, believe passionately in the future.
Among our members are strong leaders and willing workers. Our staff is dedicated and supportive. Our outstanding music ministry revitalizes our congregation spiritually and reaches out into the community with special, standing room only, worship experiences offered by the Oratorio Choir and Orchestra, the bell choirs and the jazz service. Our youth inspire us with their enthusiasm throughout the year and through their commitment to an annual work camp in Maine, where they repair and build homes for people in need.

We are committed to and believe in Jesus Christ and His call to be active disciples in the world today. We are following Christ on an extraordinary, life-defining journey, which has no boundaries. We do not believe this is a private journey, and we reach out to all who want to join us, knowing that inclusiveness and theological diversity bring vibrancy and richness to our church's life.
