Bayberry Elementary School

Bayberry Lane
908-755-8184

A major attraction of Watchung is its traditionally outstanding elementary school. Dedicated to excellence, Bayberry School offers a rare combination of enriched quality education and the advantages of a small school.

Our motto, "Excellence on the Hill," truly expresses life at Bayberry. The school is nestled on a quiet, hilly lane surrounded by trees and wildlife. Inside there is an atmosphere of vitality that permeates the building. Hallways are filled with eager, smiling students whose work is proudly displayed on every wall. Student activities begin before school and continue well into the afternoon and early evening.

Bayberry School's configuration can be described as a tree whose branches reach out and embrace the community. The active PTO is continually planning fund-raisers and activities in support of the educational program. Through the Bayberry Outreach program of the PTO, the students are encouraged to develop a life long commitment of service to others and an acute sensitivity towards difference and diversity. The parents volunteer to assist during the day in classrooms, the library/computer center, and in the lunchroom. Community groups, police and fire departments, and representatives of a local hospital visit our school annually and involve the students in their activities.

Bayberry's highly professional group of teachers constantly strive to improve the art and craft of their teaching. Teachers network during their lunchtime, conduct and attend workshops, and enroll in graduate courses. They conduct after school activities as a "Bayberry Bonus" for our students. After school clubs include such things as sports, computers, newspaper, environment, literature and art, and drama. In the evening the staff leads parent and student centered activities such as : Family Math, Family Tools and Technology, and EPIC (Effective Parenting for Children). These dedicated, caring professionals focus on the possibilities of all children in order to develop the full potential of each child.

The curricula focuses on the NJ Core Curriculum Content and Workplace Readiness Standards. The technological advances at Bayberry demonstrate our commitment to preparing students for life in the 21st century. Every classroom has at least four computers, a laser printer, internet access, and a television connected to the teacher's computer station. Our computer lab is fully equiped with 20 IMac computers. A full day kindergarten program was established in 1982 to meet the needs of our children and their families.

Bayberry School was featured in the September 2001 issue of New Jersey Monthly Magazine as one of the top 31 elementary schools in the state. We will continue to provide exceptional educational opportunities for all our students. "Excellence on the Hill" will always be our motto.
