Bertrand Chaffee Hospital is a non-profit organization committed to providing high quality primary care, outpatient services, emergency and acute care for residents within our rural communities. In addition to the hospital, it also operates the Jennie B. Richmond Nursing Home, which is attached to the hospital.
Our facility is an acute and long-term health care complex in a rural area. The hospital is certified to operate 24 beds as a general, short-term, acute care facility. We are a vital community health resource for residents of Southern Erie, Wyoming and Northern Cattaraugus Counties. Our service area encompasses 525 square miles, and includes a rural population of 55,000 people, which contribute to approximately 75,000 patient visits to Bertrand Chaffee Hospital each year. Additionally, we are one of our region’s largest employers and a significant economic engine for the community.
Our Mission
Bertrand Chaffee Hospital is a community-governed organization recognized as the region’s leading provider and advocate of healthcare services. Our patient-focused approach ensures high quality, extraordinary value and excellent patient experiences.
Our Vision
To create a healthcare community that ensures local access to high-quality, high-value medical services for our rural neighbors. Our directors, management, medical professionals, employees and volunteers will enhance population health, improve quality of life, benefit the local economy, and sustain our tradition of excellent care for future generations.
Our History
The hospital and nursing home were named after prominent area residents, Bertrand Chaffee and his wife Jennie B. Richmond Chaffee. The Chaffees’ original residence was transformed into a hospital under the terms of Mr. Chaffee’s will. He left the home and 12 acres of land to the Village of Springville following his death in 1916, with the intent that the land was to be used solely as a hospital, and his wife would be able to occupy the estate throughout her lifetime.
Bertrand Chaffee Hospital has grown from a tiny facility into a comprehensive health center that offers inpatient care, primary and specialty care, outpatient services, surgery and emergency care. Multiple expansion projects have added thousands of square-footage to the campus, including the addition of the 80-bed Jennie B. Richmond Nursing Home in 1974.
Our Objective

To improve the quality and efficiency and healthcare services delivered to our patients by having the necessary diagnostic tools to provide accurate and timely clinical information to our physician partners and providers of primary care services.
