Bethel Baptist Church

1111 West Chatham Street
919-467-6789

History :
Bethel Baptist Church began on May 7, 1972 with the burden of Pastor Bobby Jordan, his wife Sandra and a small group of people to reach the people of Cary, North Carolina. Seventeen people attended the first service held at Don and Jean Harold's home. More space was needed to hold Sunday School so the church moved to Mrs. Lola Frank's workshop at the corner of Old Apex Highway and High House Road. The first Sunday School was held on January 4,1974 with 36 in attendance.

Two and one half acres of land were purchased at the present location on West Chatham Street and the church sold bonds to finance the first building. The members purchased pews and the church paid for the choir and pulpit furniture. A new piano was complemented in December 1979 with a new organ.

As the church continued to grow, an Education Building was added through another program and the present building B was completed on January 28,1979. On April 30, 1979, the church paid cash for approximately 3 acres of land that is now used for additional parking.

With God's abundant blessings and the faithfulness of His people, the present sanctuary that seats 600 people was completed in November 1983. Additional Sunday School classrooms and larger nurseries were also added at that time.

In 1988, the church purchased 20 acres of land to build a camp that was named Bethel Woods. A 2000 square foot building was constructed with much of the work done by church members.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on March 10,2001 for a 21,000+ square foot Family Life Center on an additional 5 acres of land. This building includes an educational wing, administrative offices, and a 5,100 square foot multipurpose room.

From the beginning, Bethel Baptist Church has had a heart for souls. The first missionary was Charles Shoaf, missionary to Brazil. Through Faith Promise, Bethel now supports more than 40 missionaries both at home and abroad. The church has also launched an independent, Hispanic church plant for the Cary community.

From the beginning, Pastor Bobby Jordan has emphasized "only one life, twil soon be past, only what's done for Christ will last". Christ has always been the cornerstone for this "House of God".
