OUR HISTORY

Our roots date back to the Old Bishop Hill Methodist Church and the organization of the Christian Union around 1864.

The first written record of the church is a copy of a deed dated 1868. The church was organized by P. P. Streevey, George Grubb, Thornton Minney, Clinton Meakle, Nicholas Pfiefer and William Kellenberger and called Bethel Chapel. Billy Kerns, an undertaker from Bourneville, Ohio built the first building, a big room measuring 36' x 24'. Later this building was replaced with a new building (1978).

The earliest activity report is that of Sunday School dated April 24, 1887. Opened by singing and prayer. Lesson 4, Genesis: chapter 47, verses 1-12. Twenty-five people were present (3 officers, 3 teachers, and 19 scholars.
