History of Calvary Baptist Church

Organized in July 1928, Calvary started in a rented building located at 2104 Main Street in Alton. For the princely sum of $25 per month, the building was available for use on Sundays and Wednesday evenings. An additional $25 was raised for the purchase of a used piano. The initial group of 40 members selected Fred Peek as the Pastor.

Completed in 1965, Calvary's new auditorium could seat 1000 people.
God has continued to bless the ministry of Calvary. Recent history shows us that Calvary has entered a new era of growth in Sunday School and worship attendance, discipleship ministry and evangelistic training and outreach.

The church voted to enter a capital fund raising program in early 1996 and as a result, the worship center was completely renovated—the project was completely debt free. In 2003 construction started on a multipurpose building that would house educational, fellowship and office space, as well as the continued enlargement of evangelism training and discipleship ministries. In March of 2004 doors were opened on the Christian Life Center. Now it facilitates many recreational outreach ministries as well as Sunday School classes and fellowship opportunities.
