Carrier Mills First Baptist Church

306 North Main Street

Our History:
The First Baptist Church of Carrier Mills was organized in 1884 through the efforts of eleven charter members. Nine came from Salem Church - Bennett Lee Blackman; Henrietta Russell; Levina Blackman; Martha Jane Adkinson; Samuel M. Parks; Sarah C. Parks; Nora Thompson; H. Marion Catlin and Dr. James A. Harris. Two came from South America - David Odum and Martha Cozart Odum. It is believed there may have been a twelfth charter member coming from Macedonia - Sarah Spears. The organizer and first pastor was Elder W.S. Blackman assisted by Elder J.K. Trovillion.

The church was organized under the name of Morrillsville Baptist Church taken from the name of the village at that time which was named for the superintendent of the railway, a Mr. Morrill. Many years later the name of the village was changed to Carrier Mills as a tribute to "Uncle" Wash Carrier who owned and operated a sawmill and who had done so much to help the development of the village. The church then became known as Carrier Mills First Baptist Church but presently as the First Baptist of Carrier Mills.

Although the first church services were held in the home of Mrs. Nora Thompson and in the building which housed the school, a frame building was later constructed and in 1915 the beautiful brick church building we now occupy was built. In 1966 the church building underwent major remodeling and since that time has had several improvements and enhancements. During 1964, 1965 and 1966 we were able to purchase all adjoining property. In May 1971 the church voted to go into a Building Program and a contract with the architects was signed for the building of an Educational Building. After the decision was made to incorporate, a special business meeting was held on May 26, 1971 for the purpose of adopting the Corporation By-Laws. Names of the corporation officers and trustees were filed with the County Recorder. Funds for the building program were secured through entering a bond program with Broadman Plan, Inc. Bonds in the total amount of $90,000 were issued by the treasurer and carried varying maturity dates. Under the spiritual leadership of the late Reverend L.M. Huff, Sr., our Educational Building was completed and dedicated in September 1972. As funds became available bonds were redeemed and by July 1, 1980 all bonds had been fully redeemed and the release recorded.

There have been many significant events in the life of our church since it was chartered one hundred fourteen years ago. The material blessings of our church have been exceeded only by the spiritual blessings.

In 1931 we began broadcasting on the "Baptist Hour" over Radio Station WEBQ and continue that participation. We remember with thankfulness the great revival of 1949 when one hundred twenty souls were saved with about eight baptized into church fellowship. In 1950 our church had three members go on a mission effort to Salem Church to begin a Sunday School and two remained to help re-establish the church. There have been a large number of ministers and deacons ordained by our church, one of them having served as Chairman of the Deacons for over forty-two years. We are proud of our Sunday School, Music Department and WMU organizations and their leadership. We have been blessed to send one of our young women as a missionary to Kazakhstan. We are grateful for the fine spiritual leadership of our pastor who came to us on October 13, 2002. We thank God for His many blessings and we pray He will use us in accordance with His will to do great things for Him.
