Chimp Haven

Chimp Haven serves as The National Chimpanzee Sanctuary. We are an independent, nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide lifetime care for chimpanzees who have been retired from medical research, the entertainment industry or no longer wanted as pets. The organization was founded in 1995 by professionals from the primatological, pharmaceutical, animal protection, zoo and business communities.

Our goals to design, construct, and manage humane, cost effective social housing for government-owned and other unwanted chimpanzees have become a reality. Chimp Haven opened its doors to the first chimpanzees in April, 2005 and may also serve as an umbrella organization for several national sanctuaries in the future.

Creating a new model of care for surplus chimpanzees, Chimp Haven provides the following:
    - a permanent home where chimpanzees can live out their lives in large, naturalistic enclosures in complex social groups;
    - an organization managed by concerned individuals who specialize in chimpanzee care and management.
    - an inexpensive low-maintenance facility design;
    - financial and organizational stability to provide lifelong care of each chimpanzee;
    - opportunities for education and noninvasive behavioral studies;
