The City of Balsam Lake is nestled on the southwest shore of Balsam Lake. The lake has an excellent reputation for its fighting large mouth bass, big northern, walleyes and plenty of crappies and sunfish. Area streams yield rainbow and brook trout. Muskies are caught close by.

The lake's 65 miles of shoreline offer plenty of space for sailboats, speedboats, canoes and eater skiers. Sandy beaches invite swimming all season long. Within walking distance of most everything is are 3 public accesses a public beach, and a municipal park with camping, picnic, and playground facilities. A ball park and tennis court are also available for your enjoyment.

A peaceful village of 950 people, Balsam Lake is situated in one of the oldest resort areas in the northwest. Stores and Shops stock cottage supplies, fishing tackle and baits, gifts, souvenirs and groceries. With 3 motels in the Balsam Lake area, accommodations are readily accessible for all events and occasions throughout the year.

Balsam Lake is also the home for the Historical Society, with two museums within walking distance of each other. The main museum is the Polk County Historical Museum. This large 3 story museum is filled with heritage and love. All the displays within the museum came from residence of Polk County. The smaller of the two museums is the Rural Life Museum. This museum shows how life was way back when. Both museums have free admission, but contributions are greatly appreciated.
