City of Frostproof

111 West 1st Street
941-635-7855

The city is home to 3,000 permanent residents. During the winter months, the city and and surrounding subdivisions and mobile home parks harbor an economic population of approximately 16,000. We offer a rural setting, with a small town, friendly atmosphere. Being centrally located, our residents can travel only a short distance to enjoy the many vaired attractions offered throughout the state. We are within an hours drive to the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Gulf of Mexico to the west, and four hours from Miami to the south, and Tallahassee to the north.

There are numerous lakes and creeks in the area that provide residents and visitors with world class bass fishing, canoeing and other water sports, and just plain relaxation. Frostproof is one of the oldest settlements in Polk County. The Frostproof Section on the north shore of Clinch Lake was originally known as Fort Clinch and established during the Indian Wars, 1849-1858. As more and more settlers arrived in the area, the early leaders decided to name the area Keystone City. They petitioned the Postmaster General to give the town that name, but he denied the request because there was a town with a similar name (Keystone Heights) near Jacksonville and he thought that would create confusion. Between 1892 and 1898, the community was known as Frostproof. During that period a couple of devastating cold fronts damaged and killed trees in the surrounding areas, but the citrus in this community showed little or no sign of damage. The residents all boasted of being frostproof to folks in other communities. The city received the official name of Lakemont in 1898, from the fact that the community has lakes on either side and sits in an area of relatively high elavation, thus warranting the title of mount (or small mountain). In 1906, the majority of citizens, not happy with the city being named Lakemont, requested the name be officially changed to Frostproof. The city received its charter in 1921.
