City Of Herreid

102 Main St. N.
605-437-2302

About Us:

Herreid was founded as a village on August 26, 1901, with the official plat being recorded on Sept. 13, 1901. While some wanted to call the village “Campa” many of the first settlers did not like the name and began to consider others.

Charles Nelson Herreid became South Dakota’s fourth Governor on Jan. 1, 1901, so they decided to name the town “Herreid” to honor the distinguished citizen.

Through fires, floods & disease, Herreid has prevailed and has recently attracted several new businesses, while watching the expansion of others. A brand new 4-plex, and several new homes have also been a welcome addition to our community.

With a quality K-12 school system, swimming pool, roller skating rink, fitness center, library, parks, senior citizens center and an assisted living facility, there’s something for everyone in Herreid!
