The City of St. Clair was first settled under the British flag in the 1700's by British Army Lieutenant, Patrick Sinclair. After the War of Independence, the City of Sinclair, as it was then known, was renamed in honor of the first American general in command of the Northwest Territory, General Arthur St. Clair. The city became famous for sawmills, shipbuilding and salt mines during the mid-19th century and became incorporated as a city in 1858.
