About Claypool UMC

In 1886, William Claypool, donated land for a Methodist Episcopal Church and cemetery to be built on Huff Creek, Logan County, West Virginia.

The church was built on logs hauled to the site by oxen. It was heated by wood and lighted by oil lamps. The benches have square nails which were made by James. D. Brown. Revered Austin Workman was the first pastor.

In 1932, the Reverend and Mrs. J. W. Thomas came here and preached in the church for a while without pay. It was during his ministry to the church that the congregation and Sunday School membership grew so large that the old log church couldn't hold them all.

So, it was decided to build a modern structure near the scene of the old log church. The church was completed in 1950 and formally dedicated on May 6, 1951. Property was acquired nearby and a parsonage was build in the mid 1950's. It was dedicated on February 23, 1957 by the pastor, Reverend E.E. Parker.

In 1986, a centennial celebration was enjoyed by the present members who were attired in old-fashioned clothing. Former members and friends were invited to the service.

In 1989, the church sanctuary was completely renovated while Reverend Chalmer Abrams was the pastor.

In 1998, the men of the church restored the log church to its original state. The church is still marching on.

In 2000, land was acquired adjacent to the church property for the construction of a large activity and fellowship building.

This year, 2001 marks the 115th year the old log church has been standing as a shrine to Christianity. Today, the old log church is used as a Sunday School classroom for teaching and spreading God's word. The present church shines as a beacon for the saved and the lost.
