In February of 2008, the Crockett Springs United Methodist Church celebrated its 30th anniversary. Although young in age and spirit, the full story of this church and her rich history begins in the distant past, many years before the 1978 merger of her two parent churches, the Alleghany United Methodist Church, and the Piedmont United Methodist Church.

Our spiritual heritage began in May of 1830, when the Alleghany Springs Methodist Church was founded. It was a charming one-room building with six windows and one door. The church had no indoor plumbing, but featured two outhouses in the back! In the cold of winter, our faithful ancestors kept warm during worship as they gathered around two pot-bellied stoves in the sanctuary. In 1966, vandals broke into the beloved church, looted it and set it on fire. Far from defeat, the congregation and community responded with Godly grace and determination! Donations came from all over the United States from people of all faiths and races, and with these resources the church was completely renovated.

Just a few miles down the road stood and old log cabin, which was built in the latter part of the 1800's as a Union Church. For many years it served as a meeting place for Union, Brethren, and Methodist worship services. In 1895 additional land and lumber were donated, and a frame building was built which became the Piedmont Methodist Church. In the late 1920's, church growth prompted the addition of several Sunday school rooms. The original log structure is gone now, but the 1895 frame structure is today known as the Jewell Building, and stands as a glorious testament to the faith and lives of those that have gone before us in the faith, and made us who we are today.

In February of 1978, these two great congregations became one. By mutual agreement, a site was found that was halfway between the two churches- an area marked by legend as a place of beauty, tranquility, and healing- Crockett Springs. Today, what was handed down by legend is a reality of God's grace to all who come here- a place of pastoral beauty, the waters of baptism, and the healing power of forgiveness and love offered in Christian community.
