Dinuba Lions Club

About Us:

Dinuba Lions Club was chartered in 1945 with Dr. Fred Batkin as its first president. Dr. Batkin was the driving force getting a number of fellows together to form a charter. The club became immensely popular and grew rapidly to a number of over 100 members. At that point in time, Dinuba did not have a facility large enough to accommodate any more members and the club had to limit its membership for a few years. Since the date of Charter, Dinuba Lions Club has been highly active and a great supporter of the community.

For many years, it was the Lions Club that took an annual trip to the mountains and cut a large evergreen tree, which was placed at the intersection of Tulare and L Streets in downtown Dinuba so that the City might have a Christmas tree.

One of the most noteworthy projects to be taken on by the Lions Club was the installation of lights for the baseball field at Washington Junior High School. Another project of interest has been the donation of $10,000 to the City of Dinuba in their effort to create a City Park at Crawford and Kamm. Most recently, Dinuba Lions Club is installing a picnic pavilion at the new park on Nebraska. The final cost on that project will be in the area of $20,000.

Over the years Dinuba Lions Club has sold Christmas trees, light bulbs, brooms and white canes. The most longtime fundraisers have been the annual Fathers Day Pancake Breakfast and the Raisin Day Booth. Lions have also held invitational baseball tournaments for Junior High age boys. Lions are currently having their 27th annual golf tournament. This year will be the first year for their golf tournament to be held at the new City Golf Course.

Sight preservation is the primary project for all Lions Clubs and Dinuba is a big participant in the eyeglass program for needy students and also as a member of the Sight Conservation Project, which allows a needy person to have eye surgery free of cost.

Dinuba Lions Club is a very generous giver to community athletic projects, school projects such as Future Farmers of America, music, drama and athletics. Lions also volunteer their time and talents in helping other programs by cooking pancakes or grilling meat. Lions have also given assisted in the freshman basketball tournaments by keeping score and as timers. Since the inception of the Lions Club Speech Contest, Dinuba Lions have sponsored the local High School speeches and escorted the local winner to speak at the next level in the contest.
