History :

With the print of chains around their hands and feet, in hope of freedom and God in their hearts, a few trusting black souls gathered under a tree and thus the Edwards Chapel AME Church had its beginning in Coldwater, Mississippi.

In 1867 God sent a man by the name of Reverend W. H. Edwards, who purchased two acres of land for $10.00 per acre east of the town of Coldwater. Deciding he wanted to build a bush harbor to worship and praise God in. By lifting up dieing eyes, and looking to the hills from which cometh thou help, in 1868, Rev. W. H. Edwards built a church and named the church Edwards Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

The first church was also the local school, which was located in what is now Edwards Chapel Cemetery. Rev. Edwards was the teacher and pastor. Later, the church school was named in his honor.
