First Baptist Church Of Hawkins

210 Forest Street
903-769-2199

History :

When that small group of sixteen Christians came together on June 11, 1911 for the purpose to organizing a Baptist Church, they must have had a vision. Perhaps not the spacious building that is enjoyed today, but a place of their own in which to worship, having met first in the old frame school building on the west side of Hawkins. Two weeks after organizing, P. A. Thorn and R. B. Smith were ordained as the first deacons for the new church. The first building, completed in 1913, provided a place of worship for the next thirty-four years.

During this time, many things came into being, including Training Union, WMU, the first Vacation Bible School, and a library. Growth in buildings began in 1947 with a new brick building housing an auditorium, Sunday School rooms, and a fellowship area, and continued to through 1982 when the R. B. and Birdie Smith Family Life Center was constructed.

In those years, church transportation began a mobile outreach ministry, with the first bus purchased in 1970. Stability and faithfulness to God's work, have been the hallmark of this congregation, reaching out in love.

God has blessed the efforts of His people at the corner of Forest and Green.
