The First Presbyterian Church of Athens was established May 2, 1855, by Rev. Robert Hodges with nine founding members and has served the Athens area for the last one hundred and fifty years. First Presbyterian Church has been a positive force for the cause of Christ in the community. It has also helped to begin many organizations that help people in this area. First Presbyterian Church members were instrumental in starting the Food Pantry, the Fuel Fund and Labor of Love, among others. The church continues to support the Fuel Fund which is administered through the Help Center. Many church members volunteer for Labor of Love projects and at the Food Pantry. The church administers the Christmas Benevolence program which assists people in the community with food, clothing and toys.

First Presbyterian offers a Mother’s Day out program on Tuesdays and Fridays which is a wonderful program at a reasonable cost. During thet third week of June, the First Presbyterian Church provides Vacation Bible School for children ages three through fifth grade.

The church presently offers programs for all age groups. The church offers trips for seniors, activities for children and young people, and Bible studies for men and women. The Presbyterian Women are very active. They host the family night dinners for the congregation and many other programs for the women of the church. The Presbyterian Men meet monthly for fellowship over breakfast. They complete service projects for the church.

First Presbyterian Church also has an extensive music program ranging from children’s singing and hand bell choirs to our adult choir. The music program is under the direction of Mamie Downing.
