First United Methodist Church

426 Saint Paul Street

About Us:

First United Methodist Church of Gonzales is the oldest continuous Methodist congregation in the state of Texas.  Our heritage traces back to before that fateful moment when the “Come & Take It” cannon was fired in Gonzales marking the beginning of the Texas revolution.  With this honor includes a long and rich spiritual heritage and a continued devotion to loving and serving the Lord.

This congregation is an active group of believers rooted and grounded in the historic Christian faith.  We are a United Methodist congregation in connection with the Worldwide United Methodist Church, which began in 1784 in America. Our founder John Wesley was an Anglican priest who began The Methodist movement to seek to reform the Church of England.  Many protestant churches trace their beginnings to the Methodist church.

The United Methodist Church is not a creedal church that requires members to subscribe to a closely detailed system of beliefs. The only requirements for church membership is a personal belief in Jesus Christ as Lord & Savior and a commitment to support Christ’s Church by your prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness.

Beliefs:

  • We believe in a triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • Salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
  • Two Sacraments: Baptism and Holy Communion.
  • The authority of Scripture in matters of faith.
  • We believe in the primacy of grace and its availability for all people.
  • The unity of faith and works.
  • With God’s help we seek holiness in our lives and in our world.
  • We believe in conversion and new birth. God forgives sins and changes the human heart.
