About Us
On March 12, 1912, Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of Girl Scouting, organized America’s first group of Girl Scouts in Savannah, Georgia. Today, Girl Scouts remains the world's preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls - all girls - where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adults, girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives as they discover the fun, friendship, and power of girls together. Girl Scouting is the largest volunteer organization for girls in the world. It is a part of a worldwide family of girls and adults in 144 countries through the membership of Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) and the World Wide Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages, 5 – 17, or in Kindergarten through 12th grade, who subscribe to the ideals of the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
In 1927, Girl Scouting was organized in the Lansing area and continues to be leading provider of programs for just girls in the tri-county area. Today, Girl Scouts of Michigan Capital Council serves more than 5000 school age girls in Clinton, Eaton, Ingham Counties and Laingsburg. Approximately 80% of the girls are members of volunteer led troops, and the remaining 20% are served through the Council’s outreach various initiatives. These include: programs during or after school in neighborhoods lacking volunteers; initiatives for groups new to Girl Scouts such as those through the Islamic Center or the summer migrant families; and programs in partnership with other youth serving agencies such as the Boys and Girls Club, Community Centers, shelters and residential foster care settings. Currently, GSMCC maintains on office/ service center in Holt, a troop camping site in Wacousta, Michigan and a resident/ troop camp near Harrison, Michigan.
