Golden Isles Community Band

History:
The Golden Isles Community Band was formed in 1991 to provide music for the first Taps at Twilight celebration held on St. Simons Island on Memorial Day. The band consisted of local musicians from the counties of Glynn, Camden, Wayne, McIntosh, and Brantley and was directed by Glynn Denty. As the group grew over the years to come, they performed at many local festivals and community events with their annual performance at Taps at Twilight capping off each year. After Glynn Denty moved to Texas, Mickey Wendel took over as director of the GICB, a position he maintained for 20 years. Under his leadership, the GICB continued to grow in size, extending it's membership to include not only adults, but also college and advanced high school students. During this time, the GICB could often be seen performing on Jekyll Island, St. Simons Island, St. Marys, Downtown Brunswick, and Glynn Place Mall. The group also became a fixture at the College of Coastal Georgia providing music for their graduation ceremonies.
In 2015, Mickey Wendel decided to step down as director. Leadership of the GICB was passed on to his son, Alan Wendel, assisted by Martie Pahris and other longtime members of the band. A decision was made at this time to continue to perform around the community, but to also begin performing stand alone concerts: one in the Fall and one in the Spring. The GICB held it's first independent concert in the Brunswick High Auditorium on March 24, 2015, the performance was a resounding success.

The GICB prides itself in being the premier ensemble for local musicians. Our members are all volunteers who range from 8th grade to 80+ years old. We love music and enjoy providing music for the rest of our community to enjoy. We always welcome any new members to join our band and look forward to seeing everyone at our concerts in the Fall, Spring, and of course on Memorial Day at Taps at Twilight.
