Approximately 500 students in grades Pre-K – 5 attend our school. The original building was first occupied in 1924 with additions completed in 1936, 1949, 1958, and 1999. We are currently in the last phase of adding additional classrooms. The expected completion date is scheduled for the beginning of 2005.

All students participate in an integrated language arts program. Children’s literature is the focus of most lessons centralizing on a theme of study with skills and vocabulary building emphasized. This year, grades one and two have started a balanced literacy program. These grades currently follow the basic principles of the Guided Reading Program. The writing process is encouraged as well throughout each lesson interweaving student learning styles and problem solving processes. Current events are an essential part of classes. As students are being prepared in their future role as active citizens.

Teachers work with the students in areas of problem solving while relating math to all subject areas and real life situations. Teachers involve students in a variety of activities that include hands-on materials and technology stressing higher levels of abstract thinking. Science also involves students in real life activities through a discovery approach that introduces them to physical, geological and biological units of study.

Our fine arts program includes art, music, physical education/health, library, and world language. Students are encouraged to express themselves freely in these areas, and teachers constantly challenge each child in their specific subject area. The school has a full time guidance counselor. That meets frequently with the students in small and large group settings. Conflict resolution is emphasized by the counselor and is a method for solving problems adopted by the whole school. Outside of academics, the students have the opportunity to join the Safety Patrol program in grade 5, the Student Council in grades 3 – 5, the school band and chorus in a variety of grade levels and finally the Yearbook Committee in grade five. We provide numerous opportunities to actively engage our students.

School spirit is an important part of the daily lives of our students. To assist in school spirit, we have pep rallies and a school spirit day. Students are also recognized monthly with the “Student of the Month” program. Our parents play a vital role in our school, and we have an active Parent Teacher Organization which continually supports the school with fundraisers and family nights.

We have frequent visits from our school mascot, the bulldog “Spike.” Children wait for his planned arrival and jump for joy during his visits. Parents/community members are encouraged to join in on the excitement found in the school. Finally, each year we have a school-wide theme. This year we are “Building Our Future.” This theme is dedicated to the new addition being built on to the present school building.
