About us:

The Humane Society of Terrell County began in 1985 as a modest effort between two friends to better the lives of animals in Terrell County. Over the years, hundreds of animals have been rescued and the local governments have been persuaded to make small but significant changes to their animal control program.

In October of 2000, HSTC was incorporated and shortly thereafter received their 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. The membership has grown as more people volunteered their time and money to benefit the animals.

HSTC does not have a shelter. We are a network of foster homes and volunteers in Terrell County and the surrounding area. We have no paid staff and most of our volunteers work full-time jobs in addition to their "jobs" with HSTC. We receive no money from government sources and rely solely on donations and fundraisers to house and care for our homeless pets.

HSTC has adopted a no-kill policy. We do not euthanize animals as a means of population control. Instead, we focus on spay/neuter efforts to reduce the pet overpopulation. Our ultimate goal is that there be no more homeless pets.

Terrell County is a rural community and the industry is primarily agricultural. More than a quarter of the population lives below the poverty level.
