The Illinois Valley Evangelical Free Church formed as a result of a split within the First Congregation Church of Ottawa, UCC. A divide had developed over fundamental Christian beliefs. After a congregational vote and negotiated meetings, Pastor Kirk stepped down. The terms for Pastor Kirk’s dismissal included not being allowed to preach or perform ministerial duties for a period of time after his dismissal. As a result, many people left the First Congregational Church. Most were absorbed into various other churches within the community.
