History:
Beginning about 1913, priests from St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Torrington began traveling to Harwinton to celebrate Mass for the Catholics of the area. This service continued for a number of years, first in private homes, then in the Old Academy building. By 1943, Mass was being said in the Town Hall for about 100 of the faithful of Harwinton. Parishioners also traveled to Torrington to participate in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and receive the Sacraments.

The original Immaculate Heart of Mary Church building was begun in 1948 as a mission church under the jurisdiction of the Rev. Daniel J. Manning, then pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Torrington. The first Mass in this church was dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary by Archbishop Henry J. O'Brien on July 3, 1949. In 1955 the 18th century homestead adjacent to the church was acquired to serve as a rectory.
