The James Renwick Alliance is an independent national nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing scholarship and education on contemporary American craft, to supporting activities directed toward this purpose, and to encouraging connoisseurship and collecting. The Alliance assists the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in adding to its permanent collection of American craft of artistic significance and superior workmanship, supports scholarly research in contemporary American craft, sponsors public educational activities, and pursues other activities in support of the studio craft movement.

The Alliance welcomes the support of all who share an admiration for the creative vision of artists working in glass, wood, metal, fiber, and clay. For over 25 years, the Alliance has supported activities and programs involving hundreds of artists, craft supporters, galleries, and partnering institutions from across the nation and around the world. The Alliance has helped the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum build the nation's premier collection of contemporary craft art through members' donations and by providing funds for the acquisitions of major pieces by notable American craft artists.

As part of its public education programs, the Renwick Alliance cosponsors may of the Renwick Gallery's presentations by distinguished artists, educators, and museum curators. Since 1992, the JRA Distinguished Artist Craft Workshop Series have offered dozens of reduced fee workshops by recognized artists in all craft mediums. In addition, the Alliance also runs a popular program of local, national and international craft study tours for its members.

In 1987, the James Renwick Fellowship Program was initiated, which allows guest curators and scholars to spend several months at the Renwick Gallery.
