Melvin H. Kreps Middle School

5 Kent Lane

The Melvin H. Kreps Middle School, named in honor of a former district Superintendent of Schools, is located on Kent Lane in East Windsor Township and has an enrollment of 1120 students in grades 6 through 8. The original school was built in 1968 with a large addition completed in 1971 and a major classroom reconstruction project finished in 1994. The Kreps Middle School has recently completed an even more extensive construction project which has given us an auditorium, another gym, new science labs and additional classrooms on both the first and second floors. In addition our multi-purpose room has been expanded and all our open space areas have been converted to closed classrooms. Our school is organized into grade level teams with five teachers working together with a shared group of 100 to 130 students in one of three teams at each grade level. This structure promotes the concept of family and allows students and teachers to develop close relationships. Teachers meet as a team weekly with guidance counselors to address the academic, social and emotional needs of their students.

The language arts/reading curriculum provides students with opportunities to engage in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The writing program is process-oriented with emphasis on clarity in composition, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary with research papers required each year. Our mathematics curriculum includes both writing and problem solving. Sixth grade students review basic functions while seventh graders expand their knowledge in pre-algebra. Eighth grade students focus on the four major cluster areas of the New Jersey Grade Eight Proficiency Assessment (GEPA). In science, students focus on three major branches of science each year which include laboratory work and long-term research projects. Reading, writing, research and higher level thinking skills are all stressed in our social studies program. In addition to these subjects, our students study a world language (Spanish, French or German) and participate in state mandated health and physical education programs. Students also receive computer instruction in our school's computer labs and in their classrooms, which have E-mail, Internet, word processing and graphics capabilities.

Enrichment opportunities and accelerated programs are provided for our academically talented students. Likewise, special needs students also have their individual requirements addressed through there source room, self-contained classrooms, in-class teacher support, speech therapy and supplementary instruction. Kreps Middle School students have the benefit of a wide range of co-curricular activities such as band, chorus, musicals, one-act plays, intramural sports, newspaper, year-book and homework club. Interscholastic sports include soccer, cross country, field hockey, cheerleading, wrestling, basketball, tennis, track, softball and baseball. There are many ways that the Kreps Middle School acknowledges student achievement and accomplishments. We have a “Student of the Month” program, honor roll assemblies, an athletic awards night and an eighth grade awards program. Further, participation in national, state and local contests allows our students to be recognized for their many talents.

We are proud of the warm, safe and secure family atmosphere that our Kreps Middle School provides allowing both preteens and teens to develop academically and socially in a supportive environment. By working together with a very active parent group, we strive to provide a quality education for all of our students.
