Church History

In October, 1964, a Bible study was begun at the home of Roy and Violet Conrad in Alliance, Ohio. Under the leadership of Mr. Dale Tilton, of Salem, there were 6 - 12 people studying the book of Romans on Monday evenings. After several months of searching, in January, 1966, the former Mount Pleasant School, an old brick school building on Route 183 a quarter mile south of Rt. 153 ("Yeagley's Corner"), was purchased by Dale and Mary Tilton. The building had been used as a cabinet-making shop and required much renovation. The work of paneling walls, painting, constructing a platform, and installing a gas furnace required a year to complete. A slipping ladder resulted in a broken leg for Roy Conrad. Use of a neighbor's phone led to an invitation to use their home for study until the building was ready for occupancy.

On September 21, 1966, a group of thirteen people met and organized into the Mount Pleasant Baptist Fellowship. An agreement was signed by those in attendance and officers were elected. On January 22, 1967 the first service was held by Mount Pleasant Baptist Fellowship in the renovated building on Rt. 183. In April, 1968 the church canvassed the area and held it's first week of evangelistic meetings with Rev. Frank Odor, of Vienna. On January 4, 1969, the group organized into the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Rev. Earl Umbaugh, State Missionary of the Ohio Association of Regular Baptist Churches moderated the meeting. A church covenant, articles of faith, and a constitution were formally adopted. Dale Tilton was called as the church's first Pastor.

A Recognition Council of the Canton Area Regular Baptist Churches was called on January 25, 1969 and the church was accepted into fellowship as "a duly organized and properly constituted Baptist church" with a charter membership of 18 persons. The church was also accepted into the fellowship of the Ohio Association of Regular Baptist Churches (O.A.R.B.C.) and the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches (G.A.R.B.C.).

The "new" building was constructed in 1987-1988 on a five acre plot a half mile north of the original location on Rt. 183. With the help of missionary builders and much work on the part of the church family, the building was ready for its first service on December 8, 1988.
