Mountain Play House

PO Box 205
814 629 9201

The Mountain Playhouse is Pennsylvania's oldest professional stock theater and one of only twelve professional summer stock theaters remaining in the United States today. The Mountain Playhouse brings Broadway-quality entertainment to the local Johnstown, Somerset, and Ligonier communities, to audiences from metropolitan Pittsburgh, and visitors from across the United States. The theater is housed in a restored 1805 gristmill. The abandoned gristmill was discovered in Roxbury, Somerset County, by founder James Stoughton and moved in 1939 log-by-log through the snow to its present site. Today, the 393-seat theater is climate-controlled for your comfort and includes a snack bar overlooking a lake. The Jenner Art Gallery (located in the theater lobby) features the works of area artists. Each summer, the Mountain Playhouse produces a season of exciting shows ranging from the best of American musical theater to thought-provoking dramas and slapstick farce. Performances run two to three weeks, each with weekday and weekend, evening and matinee performances. Members of Actors' Equity Association perform in all productions as they have since the theater's opening in 1939. The theater also employs directors from the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, and musicians from the American Federation of Music.
