About Us:

The Mountaintop Area Elementary School is the second largest of the four elementary schools in the Bald Eagle Area School District and houses approximately 250 students,16 teaching staff, and 12 support and kitchen staff. The educational program includes two classrooms at each grade level from kindergarten through sixth grade. You will find a comprehensive curriculum for all students, which includes the areas of Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science and Health. The itinerant staff are specialists in the areas of Physical Education, Art and Music, and they provide fifty minutes of instruction to the students during each six-day-cycle of the schedule. In grades four through six the students may receive instrumental lessons.Mountaintop Area Elementary School has one formal computer lab with 24 computer stations. Classrooms have at least one computer station, and the building has internet services available in numerous locations. The library has a computerized retrieval system and uses technology for reference searches. An itinerant librarian visits the school to provide instruction in library skills and to help keep the library stocked with books and other materials to meet the students' learning needs. The Accelerated Reader Program is a part of the library system too.

A Reading Recovery Program, a Title I Reading Program and a Gifted Educational Program are offered to students that meet the criteria set by the school district and the state. A trained Reading Recovery teacher works on a one-to-one basis with the first grade students and assists with Guided Reading in the other primary level classrooms. The Title I Reading teacher works with small groups of students in kindergarten through sixth grade. The sessions may occur in the regular classroom or in the Title I classroom space. An itinerant gifted teacher also works in small groups or individually with students both, in or out of the classrooms. In addition, accelerated math classes may be offered to sixth grade students who qualify for the program.Mountaintop Area Elementary School houses an After-School Program during the school week. Families interested in the program are encouraged to visit the program to see the variety of supports that are offered to the children including tutoring, physical activities and snacks.The elementary school truly benefits from an active Parent Teacher Organization. The group provides a multitude of services for students and teachers, as well as supports the many educational programs within the school. Many other local groups utilize the school facilities during the evenings and on Saturdays to provide activities for children and adults in the community.
