History:

In the spring of 1869 the conference at Topeka gave Rev. Sheldon Parker, age 59, an indefinite circuit over a territory which included Altoona and the site on which Neodesha was later built. The first sermon preached by Sheldon Parker or any other preacher on the present town site of Neodesha was in the very last months of 1869 or the first part of 1870. No definite date can be ascertained. In 1870 this circuit was given a name, the Verdi circuit, and Sheldon Parker was retained in charge. The classes grew in strength and a society was organized in the rapid growing village of Neodesha. Lots at the southeast crossing of Seventh and Main streets were secured and a box house 16’ X 22’ was built, which was occupied as a parsonage by the Rev. Parker family of seven.
