Mission:

The mission of the Association is: To promote long-term economic development in the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania through intelligent forest management, careful expansion of secondary wood processing, improved manufacturing methods and regional hardwood promotion.

Through the promotion of "added value" secondary manufacturing, NTHA encourages manufacturers to expand operations and add new product lines. Also, in order to assure a high quality of forest resources in the future, NTHA makes reforestation a major priority. Through planned regeneration and proper cutting methods, "added value"of woodlots can be realized at harvest and our valuable forests can continue to be a prime economic force within the Northern Tier for future generations.

The NTHA serves as the regional forum for the promotion of the wood industry and offers a wealth of services such as legislative involvement, job training programs, educational and safety workshops and trade show sponsorship. NTHA also offers assistance in the areas of marketing and promotion, funding, procurement, exporting, technical assistance, informational resources and referral services. Our newsletter Hard Copy, as well as this regional hardwood directory is made available to all members.

Organizations and individuals from primary and secondary wood manufacturers and related service businesses, utility companies, economic development agencies, professional foresters, government officials, landowners and all others committed to furthering the growth of the hardwood industry are welcomed and encouraged to become members of NTHA.

NTHA is committed to promoting a greater use of our area's wood resources. NTHA intends to foster better communication and unity among all contributors to the wood industry. With the most current industry information and expertise from our area's forestry professions, it is possible for members of NTHA to play a pioneering role toward the productive expansion of the hardwood industry in our Region. The Association strives for an overall improvement in the industry of one of our most precious resources. Together we can make a difference.

History:

In 1988, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania introduced the Pennsylvania Hardwood Initiative for the purpose of promoting the Commonwealth's vast natural resource. As part of this Initiative, the Northern Tier Regional Planning and Development Commission received a grant through the Department of Commerce to promote the Program within the five counties of Bradford, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga and Wyoming.

The Northern Tier forestry resource already exerts a worthy impact on the State economy. Over 58% of the area of the Northern Tier's 4,007 square miles is forest, with 89% being hardwoods. There are over 115 wood-related industries employing over 3,500 persons.

Our forests produce approximately 10% of the entire saw timber produced within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Yet, the Initiative envisions that with a coordinated effort between the harvesters, manufacturers, landowners and the public sector, this natural resource possesses an even greater potential for utilization and expansion. Therefore, the Northern Tier Hardwood Association (NTHA), a non-profit organization, was created to foster and promote the forestry industry in the Northern Tier Region.
