Pisgah Baptist Church

6392 Miller County 9
870-653-6886

With 155 years of ministry Pisgah is the oldest Southern Baptist Church in Arkansas. It was organized in 1850 in a small old one-room church with a tall ceiling and a big post down the center. Heat was provide by a wood heater and light by coal oil lamps. the floor was of rough unfinished wood that buckled up as the roof began to leak. For pews the small ongregation used benches of rough boards. April 3, 1942 the trustees purchased a plot of land for the church at only $25.00. Today the church is still located on the same property. At first services were held twice a month, but in 1949 Bro. McCalman began having services every Sunday (though only paid for two). The common phrase over the years was, "I just do not see how we can do it." The church recorded many accomplishments with God's help. In 1956 they remolded the old auditorium. The ceiling was lowered, the post removed and new hardwood flooring was installed. A front porch was added along with an inside restroom to replace the outhouse. Then soon electricity lit up the old church.

In 1960 the congregation bought a new building complete with Sunday school rooms. Air conditioning came along in 1962. By 1973 the church had grown to include an organ, a piano, a fellowship hall and a baptistery. The old church building served it's purpose but by the 1990's it needed to be replaced. On November 7, 1993 a new beautiful building was dedicated to the Lord's work. Then again in 2000 the Lord continued to bless by dding a new Family Life Center. Today the church continues to be a lighthouse for the community spreading the gospel and teaching about the love of Jesus Christ.
