Pocono Elementary Center

Warner Road
570-839-7121

The first school in Tannersville was built in the late 1820's out of logs near where CVS is today.  By 1920 there were eight grammar schools that went up to eighth grade in various parts of Pocono Township. The citizens of the community decided that a high school was needed and they chose a site that had formerly been a gristmill. In 1925 the various grammar schools were closed, bus routes were established, and all students that resided in Pocono Township attended the new school on Route 611 with the two ponds from the gristmill days in front of it.

The Pocono Township School served grades 1 through 12 from 1925 until 1961.  Then it became an elementary school when the Pocono Mountain Joint High School was built.  In 1985, the "new" Pocono Elementary Center was built on Warner Road to accommodate the growth of the area.  The school by the ponds was closed as a school and used by community groups.  In 1988 it was opened for use by kindergarten and first grade and renamed the Tannersville Learning Center. On February 20, 2000 the Tannersville Learning Center was destroyed by fire.   Today, Pocono Elementary Center serves students in kindergarten through sixth grades.  There are about 930 students and 101 faculty and staff.  The faculty and staff at Pocono Elementary Center are dedicated to preparing all students for tomorrow's challenges and opportunities.
