Rebuild Hi Tor Animal Shelter

The Rockland County Animal Shelter, currently located in Pomona NY has been operating at over-capacity and in  a state of physical disrepair for some time now.The shelter cares for more than 2,500 animals a year, from dogs and cats to chickens and even a goat, said Roberta Bangs, the shelter's executive director. The existing building was constructed to shelter 20 dogs and 10 cats, she said, but typically houses twice that number.

A recent county engineering report identified more than $650,000 in needed renovations, from a new roof to lighting fixtures and resurfacing of the dog kennels.

There is an ongoing effort to raise funds to help replace the dilapidated building that houses the shelter now. Volunteers are needed at various locations throughout Rockland County to help raise funds to finance the new building.
