Rossville Consolidated School District

History:
The Rossville Consolidated School District is composed of Clay Township, Carroll County, and Ross and Owen Townships of Clinton County. Owen and clay Townships had traditionally sent their students to another school for the last 3 or 4 years of their education. A large majority of those students came to Rossville Schools.Education in Rossville appears to have been around since the origin of the town itself. Records state that a school was built in 1831 on the farm of Samual Seawright at the edge of Rossville. A log structure was built in 1833 and served as the school until a frame structure was built in 1840. The frame structure was used until a red brick building was constructed in 1861.The red brick structure was expanded and used until 1902, when it was condemned and a new white brick building was erected. This building was a township school and accepted students from the surrounding area as one room schools closed. This structure stood and was in use until 1968.In 1914, a wood frame gymnasium was built across the playground to the west of the school and was used until a new brick gym was built in 1929. An annex to the white brick building was built in 1923. When the new gym was completed, the school became a 3 building complex connected to each other.
In 1956, a new elementary building was built south of the complex on the current school site. It later was incorporated into the current school structure. One would have to look closely today to see that part of the building. On May 18, 1957, the township trustees and advisory boards of the three townships adopted a joint resolution which created the Rossville Consolidated School District effective August 1 1957. With the help of Senator Roy Conrad, a Rossville grad, the plan was accepted by the State Reorganization Commission even though enrollment did not quite meet state standards.April 12, 1965 was a historic day for the school district. One of the Palm Sunday tornados that swept through Indiana went through Ross and Owen Townships. One-half mile west of Moran, the tornado struck the Owen school building, which at that time housed all of the 5th and 6th grade students from the entire district plus two classes of the fourth grade. The building was demolished beyond further use for school purposes.The immediate problem of providing instructional space for the displaced students was solved by use of the Owen building for the fourth grade and the Methodist and Presbyterian Churches of Rossville for 5th and 6th grades.
As a result of this event, a new school was put on the drawing board while temporary buildings were used until construction could be completed. The elementary moved into its new facilities in August of 1967, but the high school portion was not ready until January of 1968. The gymnasium was completed by the summer of 1969. The Vocational Ag building was built as a separate structure in 1968.The Rossville Consolidated School District unveiled a 4.5 million dollar renovation in the fall of 1999 including a 790-seat auditorium. The new look also included new chemistry and biology labs, two new science classrooms, a choral department classroom, office and piano. The old science department was changed to include three new computer labs. Walls and lockers were also repainted. A new concession area was included for athletics and the arts.The 2.5 million-dollar auditorium included a 50-foot stage with modern lighting and acoustics. The new facility held a Grand Opening and Dedication at 1:00 in the afternoon of Sunday, October 10, 1999. The Dedication included the first performance of the Rossville Choirs in their new home.The patrons of the corporation take a great sense of pride in the quality of education that has been provided by the corporation. Students of this corporation have consistently excelled in ISTEP scores and we have had national qualifiers from the Speech Team, FCCLA and FFA programs. The Boy's Basketball and Baseball programs have both produced a Class A state championship for the school. We even have many tuition paying students who come to our corporation due to the quality of education provided to them. It is with great pride that we continue to provide quality education in a small school setting.
