About Rotary Club of Pico Rivera
For the second year, the Rotary Club of Pico Rivera operated a safe and sane fireworks stand as its main fundraiser. Immediate Past President Julian Balderas reflected that despite the small numbers of the club, "Everyone really pitches in and we just get it done." Many members, like Balderas, brought their spouses, significant others and other adult family members to help out. The club gave customers informational flyers on the purpose of Rotary and the projects accomplished by the club, both locally and internationally. Current President Edward Chavez held the club's weekly meeting on the Fourth of July at the fireworks stand and, in commemoration of villages and cities throughout the colonies ringing bells upon the announcement of the Declaration of Independence, the club rang its Rotary bell for one full minute during the meeting. The club grossed more than $20,000 in its five days of sales.
On July 12 in a meeting at the Dal Rae Restaurant, President Elect, Dr. Rose Marie Joyce, retired president of Rio Hondo College, gave a presentation on her trip with Rotoplast International to Santa Cruz, Bolivia, in January of this year. Joyce assisted a medical team of plastic surgeons from Southern California that provided free treatment for 72 children with cleft-lips and palates. These children are shunned in society, and the free plastic surgery gave them a renewed opportunity for improved self-esteem and achievement without the cruel judgment of others.
On July 14-15, the club's members walked continuously for 24-hours in the city's Relay for Life to honor cancer survivors, remember lost loved ones and make a club contribution of more than $1,000 to the city's collection for the American Cancer Society.
