Rotary Club of Snellville

About Us:

The organization of the Rotary Club of Snellville began in the summer of 1990 when the District Governor Jim Kent appointed Robert Andrews to serve as the District Governor's Special Representative. The initial organizational meeting sponsored by the Rotary Club of South Gwinnett was held at Summit Chase Country Club on September 25, 1990. On October 16, 1990, a list of 26 charter members were submitted to Rotary International who issued the official charter for the Rotary Club of Snellville on November 19, 1990.

The charter officers of the Rotary Club of Snellville were Dennis Still, President; Mike Berg, President-Elect; David Kendall, Secretary; John Keim, Treasurer; Larry Anderson, Sergeant at Arms and Directors, Jim Guatney, Randy Litton, Johnny Canup and Frank Jakes. The other charter members are Robert Cason, Jerry W. Chapman, William Chapman, Emmett W. Clower, Dale Eich, Wayne Ewing, Chris Fluehr, James D. Hamil, II, Gale Hulme, Donald D. Johns, Jerry H. McDonald, Carol Miller, Gary L. Morris, Mike McGarity, Marie N. Soracco and Larry Walton.

The Club's first community service project involved cosponsoring the Foster Children's Christmas Party to provide a gift to each foster child in Gwinnett County. In subsequent years, the Club provided turkeys to foster families at Thanksgiving, and in recent years provided book backpacks for foster children. The Club has annually sponsored the GUIDE Drug Education Booth at Snellville Days and the United Way Kickoff Breakfast. We have participated each year in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life and in Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful's Adopt-a-Road program. Other community service projects include Public Lands Day and Operation Outreach USA. A Race into Spring 5K Road Race fund raiser was held in 1995 and 1996. The Club's principal fund raiser has been an annual charity Golf Tournament at Summit Chase Country Club which has netted our charities in excess of $125,000.00.

The Club in each year provided two college scholarships of at least $2,000.00 to deserving local students at South Gwinnett High School and Shiloh High School.

On October 23, 1991, the Interact Club of South Gwinnett High School was chartered with Mary Ann Nielsen as faculty advisor. In March, 1996 the Interact Club of Shiloh High School was chartered with Lois Tory and Gayland Revis as faculty advisors. At least two high school students from each Interact Club each summer have attended the district RYLA Camp sponsored by the Club.

Vocational service has been a special emphasis with the Club awarding two $1,000.00 Vocational Scholarships at Gwinnett Technical Institute each year. In cooperation with the other Rotary Clubs in Gwinnett County, the Rotary Club of Snellville for several years sponsored the GOAL Program at Gwinnett Technical Institute to recognize outstanding students in the vocational education program.
