Satanta United Methodist Church

500 Arapahoe
620-649-2926

The Satanta United Methodist Church and building began with a schoolhouse built by Willie Yuncker that was moved from the Southwest part of the county in 1912 to the current Satanta site. The non-denominational church was called Union Church. Then in 1913 John Harper offered $350 toward a new church and building if it would be called Harper Chapel and be a Methodist Episcopal Church. The first service for the newly formed Harper Chapel was on April 6, 1913 led by the Rev. J. W. Jones who now had a 6 point charge. The new building was erected and dedicated on December 20, 1914

A new building program was initiated in the late 1920’s and Harper Chapel was moved and sold for $250 to Charles Anton. Mrs. C. L. Hickman broke ground May 1, 1929 and then about a year later on July 27, 1930 a red brick structure was dedicated. It could seat 700. Then a new educational building was finished in 1964. The present day sanctuary replaced the red brick structure in 1981.
