Shiloh Baptist Church

515-521 West Fourth Street
908-754-3353

The Shiloh Baptist Church has been serving God and the Plainfield community since 1908. "Born" from Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Shiloh Baptist Church was organized May 17, 1908 at Reform Hall under the pastorate of Reverend M. A. Alexander. The first few months of services were held at Reform Hall and later moved to the Third Street Hall. In 1909, Shiloh purchased her first property at Fourth and New Streets. That property was sold in 1914 when Shiloh purchased and moved to its current location at 515-517 West Fourth Street. The building that existed on the property was remodeled and served as the place of worship until construction on on a new facility began in 1931, under the pastorate of Reverend M. A. Alexander.

The basement of the church was completed first and services were held there for several years. There was great joy in moving from the old frame church to the basement of the new church. A real sense of progress was felt, yet Shiloh was still dependent on the "mother church," Mt. Olive, for baptisms. It would be several years before Shiloh completed construction on the remainder of the church building and could perform her own baptisms

Beginning in 1997, under the pastorate of Reverend Dr. Gerald Lamont Thomas, new ministries and spiritual opportunities were introduced including "Rites of Passage" for young people, the "Christian Education Faculty," forming the support structure for our Sunday School and "Discipleship Training." In 1999, "SIBLE," the Shiloh Institute of Biblical Education and Learning, began offering classes in virtually every area of Christian Education. The design of biblical training is to equip every member with the ability to know the Word in order to implement its teachings into their everyday lifestyles. Through the "Pastor/Church Covenant," Evangelism, Discipleship, Stewardship, and Missions; Family Life, and Christian Unity have been established as priorities of Shiloh's ministry and mission to the community and world.

With the additional ministries, it became increasingly apparent that the existing facilities would not be able to meet the needs of the ministry. Opportunities for expansion were sought and in December of 1997, under the pastorate of Reverend Dr. Gerald Lamont Thomas, the membership voted to purchase a parcel of land on Plainfield Avenue between South Second and Third Streets which is currently being utilized as one of Shiloh's parking areas. A search for additional property in the city of Plainfield was begun to find the best location for the new Shiloh to call "home."
Shiloh parishioners worshipped at Plainfield High School for almost 2 1/2 years while the New Shiloh was being built. Then on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2005, through the joint partnership of "Pastor and People: Partners in Christ, Partners for Life," Rev. Dr. Gerald Lamont Thomas led the Shiloh Family into their new $13.5 million, 69,000 square foot edifice; complete with a sanctuary, chapel, cultural arts center, gymnasium, educational classrooms and administrative offices. And the best is still yet to come!!
