Sicomac Elementary School is a kindergarten through grade-five elementary school and home to three hundred fifty-six wonderful students.  The school is noted for academic excellence and for fostering a sense of civic responsibility.Through the years, Sicomac School has received a number of significant recognitions.  The Student Council has been identified by as an Honor Council School of Excellence by the National Association of Elementary School Principals.   Our school has also been identified as “one of thirty-one great elementary schools” by New Jersey Monthly Magazine.  The students’ efforts in a worldwide initiative garnered them recognition on the Oprah Winfrey show.

Each year, the faculty and staff develop a timely theme for the school and that provides an opportunity to examine curriculum through a new perspective.  Our theme this year, Framing Our Future, encourages the students to look at their past and present and reflect upon their future.  It is the perfect year for this theme as we celebrate Sicomac School’s fortieth anniversary.Further support for our theme, comes through our daily morning readings.  The readings encourage the children to make positive choices in life.  Throughout each week, the children are afforded opportunities to develop and demonstrate civic competence as Sicomac citizens. They are frequently reminded to look beyond themselves and to seek ways to make personal contributions to their families, school community, their neighborhoods, and the world.

At Sicomac School, our community is enhanced by school-wide meetings that provide opportunities for children and teachers from each grade to come together to discuss pertinent issues, to rejoice in each other's accomplishments, and to foster a sense of school spirit. The nationally recognized Student Council rallies the student body to support various activities to promote civic pride and responsibility. From the earliest grades, Sicomac students learn the significance of sharing with others.Sicomac School students are provided with a strong academic foundation.  As they progress along the academic continuum, they master age and grade appropriate skills. Simultaneously, they are encouraged to look beyond the obvious and apply critical thinking skills to solve problems in unique ways. Using an across-the-curriculum approach, the teachers provide opportunities for students to demonstrate their knowledge, not only through traditional means, such as reports and tests, but also through demonstrations, performances and other creative activities.

Over the past few years, the Sicomac teachers have been engaged in action research that has capitalized upon the instructional strategies promoted in the text, Strategies that Work: Teaching Comprehension to Enhance Understanding by Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis. As a result of that work, a common language for learning exists throughout the school. Children and staff repeatedly make text to self connections, text to text connections, and text to world connections. The Sicomac staff is one that maintains high standards for themselves and for their students.  Instruction is driven by two significant questions: “How do children learn?” and “What is in the best interest of children?”  The air at Sicomac School is consistently charged with enthusiasm as ideas are shared, strategies developed, and learning is a constant for all.
