The county seat, Truth or Consequences, is home to 9 spas, 3 museums and 13 art galleries. The downtown historic spa district sits on an aquifer of over 2 million gallons of thermal mineral water with 28 identifiable minerals and no sulphers. Art Magazine listed the city as "one of the top 100 towns for an artist to live in" and Budget Living as "the most affordable Spa Town in America."

The City of Elephant Butte is home to Elephant Butte Lake, the largest body of water in New Mexico. The State Park in which this lake is located attracts 100,000 visitors on summer weekends.

Three more museums and four art galleries are located in some of the small county villages and ghost towns. Lakes, the river, riparian areas, upland desert and mountain ranges offer excellent birding in over 5 life zones. With an active Arts Council, Chambers of Commerce, and service organizations, the events calendar is always full.
