History:

St. Paul United Church of Christ traces its beginnings to 1854 when a pioneer German Missionary named Friedrich Schmid began conducting occasional services in the Chelsea area. He started with 5 families meeting in borrowed space or family homes. The congregation grew to 15 families by 1865, and 3 years later, became formally organized with a constitution. The cornerstone for a new church was placed and the name St. Paul was chosen. In 1869, 43 members took communion in the new church.

The congregation moved to its present home, just south of downtown on Old U.S. 12, in 1966. The cross in our sanctuary was built by church member Paul Seitz, from a tree cut on his Chelsea farm.
