Sycamore United Methodist Church

9710 Old Stage Road
804-541-1181

Mission:

The mission of The United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Christian disciples are followers and students who devote their lives to becoming like Christ through study, worship, service, prayer, and the ongoing work and power of the Holy Spirit. To make disciples, we reach out and receive people; help them build a relationship with God; nurture and strengthen them in the Christian faith; send them forth to live transformed and transforming lives—to be the hands, heart, and mind of Christ for the world. Each local congregation fulfills this mission in ways that make the best use of available human and material resources and that best meet the needs of the community. All of this is possible only by God’s grace, the love of Christ, and the power and company of the Holy Spirit.

History:

The history of Sycamore United Methodist Church is a story of a people who have been committed to loving God, one another and the world around them for many generations. It is a congregation that loves to worship and study together, as well as serve in mission for Jesus Christ.

The actual roots of Sycamore and other Methodist congregations in Prince George County stem from a great Methodist revival that took place in 1787. After a strong movement of the Spirit, churches were established on the Prince George Circuit, and Methodism began to take root in the county and surrounding region.

The earliest church records available show that Sycamore had been meeting prior to 1845, but that the first Sycamore Church was built in the year 1845. In 1875, a new church was built using some of the old timbers from the first church. This building was moved to its current location on Old Stage Road. Major improvements were made in the 1950's and 1960's. Expansions of the current building continued into the 1980's and many improvements have continued overtime including the addition of space in an educational trailer to assist in housing Sunday school rooms and the church office.

As the building has grown and expanded, the congregation and the ministries of the church have also expanded. The church is composed of families that have worshipped at Sycamore for generations as well as of newcomers to the church and community.

In 2005, the church sanctuary was full for each worship service. The need for space and the ability to reach new people led Sycamore to add a second Sunday worship service. Additionally, the ministry and stability of the church allowed for it to transition in 2005 from being a part of three churches on the Prince George Charge to assuming the status with the United Methodist Church as a "station church", a church served by its own full-time pastor.

Sycamore has been a part of the rich heritage of a changing and growing community in Prince George County. It is a church that responds to local needs through mission projects and outreach, while also working to share love and the good news of Jesus with those abroad. Through the faithful lives of women, men and young people, Sycamore seeks to share the goodness of Jesus in all places and at all times.

God's future for Sycamore certainly holds many exciting opportunities as we celebrate our rich history and look forward to where God is leading us next.
