The Arts Center At Ocean Grove

P.O. Box 55
732-502-0050

Mission & Future Goals

The Ocean Grove Historic Preservation Society was established in order to preserve the site known as the "Old" Neptune High School. The Society is working to restore the building as an Arts Center. A comprehensive cultural and performing arts program which will enhance the cultural life of the surrounding communities will gradually be instituted once the art center is opened. The focus of the restoration is to create a home for the arts and various cultural programs for the shore communities, children, residents and visitors alike. With your help we can make it happen.

This magnificent chandelier hangs in the Victorian Auditorium on the main floor of the Art Center. It is the original auditorium light with its porcelain sockets and wiring dating from the end of the last century. The chandelier is a special design made under the personal direction of the president of the manufacturing company, according to The Ocean Grove Times in 1898. This fixture was the focal point of the lighting for the auditorium which also had 75 other lamps adorning the ceiling.

Also seen in the picture is the original metal ceiling manufactured by a French company in 1887 with its ornate design and cornices. When installed it was the state of the art and is now again in vogue.

In the not too distant future, patrons will enjoy challenging dramas, engaging musicals, and hilarious comedies in the 600-seat Victorian auditorium. Varied concerts and art exhibits will be featured. Younger thespians will be able to enroll in youth theater to study acting, and theater production. In cooperation with local school districts, our educational program will help bring Shakespeare to the Shore as well as other genres. Local and global artists will be featured through an artist in residence program. These varied performances will be an educational experience the youth of the area might otherwise never have. The purpose of this effort is to create a home for the arts and various cultural programs for the shore communities: children, residents and visitors alike.
