History:

Bishop's is a Family:

Step on to the campus of The Bishop's School and you enter an uncommon place. The grassy Quad, the distinctive Irving Gill designed buildings, the Chapel and its tower with a gold-tiled dome, all contribute to a setting that fits the vision of the School's co-founder, Ellen Browning Scripps, who believed “...that the silent influences of environment play a part in the deepening and development of the mind.”

As a college preparatory school, Bishop's believes that certain skills, knowledge, and the ability to reason are necessary to meet the demands of a college education and to benefit from it. The School's affiliation with the Episcopal Church reflects the belief that knowledge combined with a spiritual awareness better enables students to function as caring, effective adults in today's world. In addition to stimulating and challenging students academically, the School's mission includes helping young people learn to be morally discriminating and to define ethical standards that will take them from adolescence to adulthood. At Bishop's, the focus is on developing the whole person.

Unique Learning Environment::

The Bishop’s School is an independent, day school for students in grades seven through twelve. The School provides a supportive, yet challenging environment, in which students can learn and succeed. An average class size of 15 students allows teachers and students to more easily achieve academic and personal interaction as they explore concepts in a more collegial atmosphere. An 8 to 1 student-teacher ratio, strong academics, dynamic arts, and competitive athletics, set the stage for Bishop's students to explore a wide range of opportunities, allowing them to learn skills and develop their talents as they learn more about themselves and how to make their way in an increasingly complex society.

The tradition of community service is essential to meeting the goals of an independent school education, and Bishop's students on all six, grade levels complete a yearly community service requirement. For the academic day, boys and girls wear uniforms. Though Bishop's is affiliated with the Episcopal church, the School enrolls students of all faiths. During weekly chapel services, students and faculty come together to worship, either by quiet reflection or active participation

Strength of the Faculty:

A Bishop's teacher is someone who is passionate about his or her subject matter, and committed to helping young people grow into responsible, well-educated, mature young adults. Selected for their capacity to teach, stimulate, interest, and guide students, faculty members are recruited nationally and bring with them a wide variety of educational and life experiences. Whether it is in a classroom setting or more informally on the Quad or the terrace, Bishop's teachers get to know their students. Every student is assigned a faculty advisor with whom they meet every day. The advisory system is designed to be supportive in the academic, behavioral, and social arenas. Faculty advisors work with students, acting as academic counselors reviewing grades and planning schedules for each academic year, and often guiding students as they grapple with relationship and peer pressure issues.
