Town of Carthage

The Town of Carthage established a Historical Committee in 1982. The purpose of the committee is to report to the Town Board on all issues that have historical significance for the town and to preserve the history of Carthage for future generations. In accordance with these directives the committee established a Museum to house information relevant to the Town's history. Initially the items were housed in the McDonald Building, but in 2001 the committee opened a The Carthage Museum at 202 Rockingham Street. (pictured)

The Museum goal is to preserve the history of the Town and its people. Visitors to the Museum will learn about the schools, businesses and churches of the past and present in Carthage. There is also a War Room were information and personal articles of our brave fighting boys who served our country are on display.

The committee also has an interest in preserving present day Carthage and has established a Historical District in the town. We are presently working on expanding that district to ensure that the Town is preserved and to provide tax credits for its citizens.

Activities sponsored by the committee include our own 'Antique Road Show,' Christmas Tour of Homes and the Annual Buggy Golf Tournament. The golf tournament is held the Sunday before the Buggy Festival to kick off the event. This year's tournament will be May 2nd at our own golf course 'Little River Farm'.
Hours of operation of the Museum are each Sunday afternoon from 2:00pm-5:00pm. We are dedicated not to preserving just buildings but to preserving the history of the people of Carthage. If you have any questions or wish to participate in our events please call the Town of Carthage for information at 910-947-2331.
