History:

Jacob Hemingway, the original Yale student, served as the first pastor (1704-1754) of the Congregational Church. In 1774 the Old Stone Church was erected, the first minister was Nicholas Street. British General William Tryon invaded this area in 1779. During the Revolutionary War, Lafayette encamped on the Green, revisiting it in 1824. In 1881 Fair Haven, Granniss Corners and Morris Cove were ceded to New Haven. The initial Town meeting (1785) named Issac Chidsey the First Selectman. The Town of East Haven became an incorporated Town in May of 1785.

Today, East Haven is served by and linked to New Haven and eastern Connecticut by Interstate 95 with local access roads leading directly to highway exits and entrances. Interstate 95 and Connecticut Route 80, located in northern East Haven, not only provide easy access to New Haven but also to Interstate 91, the main route to Hartford, CT. East Haven is conveniently located within minutes of the New Haven Terminal, a deep water berthing facility. Amtrak owns and maintains tracks in East Haven and provides service to Boston, New York, and Washington D.C. along the northeast corridor, shoreline route which passes through East Haven. The Tweed-New Haven Airport on the western boundary of East Haven has regularly scheduled commuter flights to Philadelphia.
