History

The First Baptist Church of Tulia, Texas was organized on July 1, 1891, by a small group of Baptist believers. When none of the early denominations in town had a church building, arrangements were made for the Baptists, Methodists, and Presbyterians to hold services in the district school house. The name of the Baptist church was the “First Baptist Church of Christ”. This was changed to the “First Baptist Church” in 1920. Baptist membership grew to 59 in 1895. “The Ladies Aid Society” was organized in 1896 to raise funds for the church.

After sharing a church building for several years with the Methodists, the first Baptist church building was erected in 1906. This building had an indebtedness of $2500 and no insurance. It was struck by lightning on July 1, 1908 and destroyed by fire. A second building was erected in 1909 of rose-colored brick. Despite the five year drought, it was dedicated debt-free on May 3, 1914. This was the only brick church building in the Baptist association.

We have come a long way since then with several changes in our facilities and a total of twenty-seven pastors. But, more than that, we have continued to look beyond our walls by being involved in missions and ministries that touch lives in our community, state, and around the world.

What a rich heritage! Now it is our responsibility to continue the task. As we thank God for the vision and sacrifices of our founding fathers, may we be grateful for all that He continues to bless us with today. And, may we have a renewed commitment to serve God through His Church by attending regularly, supporting financially and becoming more involved in the various ministries.
