While research is still being conducted, it appears that the Van Fire Department was incorporated in early 1942. It was started with five original members from the Van community: Johnny Bouge, Clovis "Mule" Ellison, Gordon Kidd, Brian Hilliard and the fifth member is being researched.

The first fire engine was donated by the Pure Oil Company. The city's second fire engine was purchased February 18, 1949 from American-LaFrance Foamite Corp. On March 25, 1949, the city purchased a lot from Dr. J.O. Crim for the current location of the fire department on South Maple across from Van City Hall and Van Police Department.
